Below I am pasting a mail I sent to IRCTC and also the clear reply I got from them. I am sure most of you would have faced below queries regarding Tatkal Waitinglist tickets under IRCTC:
I would like information on below cases (as the same is not clearly mentioned on IRCTC website):
What does ticket status CKWL stand for? I understand this is for Tatkal Waiting list. Please confirm / correct me.
What are the cancellation terms for Tatkal Waiting List?
If a passenger cancels the ticket, will the entire amount excluding Rs 20 be refunded?
If the ticket is dropped by Indian Railways due to non-availability of seats at the time of chart preparation, will the entire amount excluding Rs 20 be refunded?
How differently is the clearing of a Tatkal Waiting List ticket treated compared to General Waiting List tickets if a General confirmed ticket is cancelled?
I understand that only a cancellation of Tatkal confirmed ticket would ensure confirmation of Tatkal Waitlisted ticket. Is this true?
Kindly provide the replies. Also, I would suggest inclusion of above clarifications on the IRCTC website as lot of internet users seem to have the same doubts and a lot of posts are seen online regarding the same.
Reply from IRCTC:

Does Tatkal waitlist have priority over General waitlist on Indian Railways?
THE ABOVE CLARIFICATION IS NOT AT ALL CLEAR. MY QUESTION IS I AM HAVING TWO TICKETS GENERAL WAIT LIST IS 30. AT THE SAME TIME I HAVE BOOKED A TATKAL TICKET FOR THE SAME TRAIN AND THE TATKAL WAIT LIST IS 30. WHILE FINAL CLEARING AND PREPARING CHART WHICH ONE OF THESE WOULD GET PRIORITY AND GET CONFIRMED. MY SPECIFIC QUESTION IS THAT WHETHER THE PRIORITY IS GIVEN FOR CLEARING WATITLIST IN TATKAL AND THEN GENERAL WAIT LIST IS CLEARED.
I have tatkal wl 5&6 in golden temple mail on 20 Nov 13 from nzm to bct .what are the chances of confirmation??
i booked tatkal tiket.it shows WL60. i want to know may be it have chance to get coonfirm or not.if it not canfirm means, i have to cancel the ticket or it will be automattically cancelled.
Mr./Ms. Megha has not informed whether the clarifications especially the last one is already available in IRCTC web site. If not, whether they are taking/taken action to include this point. I was given impression from my friends that since the Railways charge extra amount for Tatkal, they consider more Tatkal Wait listed passengers would be accommodated even from General Ticket Cancellation. After taking CKWL 23 ticket yesterday, I found General waiting list was only 20. Actually I could have booked for General Waiting list ticket, in which case chances of confirmation/RAC were sure. Now that CKWL has come down to 11 after preparation of Chart and hence I did not travel today. Why it could not be placed in RAC atleast is my question.
i have purchase tatkal w/l ticket through internet , not chart prepard and it is not confirmed then what to do ihave to cancell the ticket or it is automatically cancelled
I booked e tatkal ticket wating if it is not confirm
can cancalled through net or counter
what is refund position
Tatkal confirmed ticket not cancelled or we can say no refund of money, but if you have waiting tatkal ticket if not become confirm then excluding 20 rupees all amount of money refund in your A/C.
