Nostalgia = Part 1 - Zanjeer/Deewar - The Movies

                                                      Zanjeer

.

Zanjeer  was the 13th movie of Amitabh,and 13 proved lucky for him.Before that, his movies like Saat Hindustani,Giraftar(with Jeetendra),Ek Nazar,Ghar Ghar ki Kahani(Anil Dhavan),Parwana(Navin Nischal)flopped.

Zanjeer has an interesting story in itself.The story was copied from an English Movie,which i had seen a few years back at Rex cinema,called "Death Rides a Horse",the same nighmares with a horse rearing in his sleep,the hero looking for revenge.Prakash Mehra,the producer and director (in the 60's he had directed the hit "Jab Jab Phool Khile" of Shashi Kapoor and Nanda,later this movie was copied and made into  Raja Hindustani,again a hit) purchased this story from Dharmendra,who wanted to make it,but was too busy.PM wanted Raaj Kumar  in the role that Amitabh Bachan did ultimately.Raj Kumar told PM"As it is i dont sing songs inmy movies,but Jaani aapke balon se tel ki boo aa rahi hai (Your hair stinks of hairoil).So he refused

Next Dev Anand was approached.He said how can i do a movie where i dont sing a song? I want at  least 5 to 6 songs,I want Zeenat Aman as the herione,and RD Burman to do the songs ( their Hare Rama Hare Krishna" in 1971 had become a big hit,with Zeenat ,and RD giving the music).PM put his foot down.

For the herione PM selected Jaya Bhaduri .Since Dev and Raaj Kumar did not want to act with her,she suggested Amitabh Bacchhan's name for the Hero.PM was aghast,and refused as he wanted a big name opposite Jaya,who was a big celebrity herself by then.She offered to act free in the movie,if Amitabh was chosen,because she loved Amitabh,and he had promised to marry her,when he had a big hit.For PM, this was a good opportunity,as he was getting the herione free,and distributors lapped it up on the mahurat day itself,bcs it featured Jaya Bhaduri.

The rest they say is history.Salim Javed rode to success along with Amitabh Bacchhan.And all with a copied story,rather as they say these days,the movie was inspired,not copied.

Deewar

The producer,Gulshan Rai had produced the super hit JOHNNY MERA NAAM in 1970 with DevAnand,and Vijay Anand as director.He fell out with Vijay Anand,during Deewar,and chose Yash Chopra,who was just starting his career.In came Amitabh as the natural choice.For Shashi Kapoor role, the first choice was Rajesh Khanna,but Amitabh was not on good terms with him,bcs Rajesh Khanna had given him a hard time in Anand,and Namak Haram,when RK was on the top.Then came Navin Nischal,but Amit refused,because NN had troubled Amit during "Parwana".So they chose the noncontroversial Shashi Kapoor,for whome this movie became the turning pointin his career.
Salim Javed copied the first half of the movie from Dilip Kumar's GANGA JAMUNA and the second half from MOTHER INDIA, where the mother shoots the son.A nice mixture.

This story was copied from the life of Haji Mastan,the orignal don  before Dawood Ibrahim came on the scene.

dear kalyanee,

i think mazil was a flop,if memory serves me right,though i personally loved it.all basu chatterjee movies were my favourites,rather are, did u see piya ka ghar, with anil dhawan,jaya bhaduri,and that kishore song,which i dont recall now.yes the teas and samosas,and no vulgarity in the movies,all clean and enjoyable,indian locales.

kamalji,
was manzil a flop?! surprised....
i liked that movie. a lanky amitabh looks gr8 in younger movies (even now), the songs were gr8....basu chatterjee and hrishikesh mukherjee movies were adorable! the type of movies associated with hot tea, coffee and spicy snacks (pakodas, samosas, etc). that setting itself, of those kind of movies was so different that it was envious to see commoners living in so much space and happiness (compared to now)!
