~ Remembering Ahmed Faraz ~

Ahmed Faraz is a familiar name to all poetry and ghazal lovers.
His nazms and ghazals have been sung by leading ghazal singers.

His most famous ghazal 'Ranjish Hi Sahi'
has been sung by leading ghazal singers including
Beghum Iqbal Bano, Farida Khanum, Mehdi Hassan and Ghulam Ali.
Runa Laila, Talat Aziz,  Padmaja Joglekar
and a few others have also sung this ghazal.
I am not sure if Jagjit Singh has also sung 'Ranjish Hi Sahi'.
Do let me know if you know about the same.
I think Mehdi Hassan version is the best.
Next I liked Runa Laila and Talat.

An accomplished poet of the recent times, Ahmed Faraz
died a few days back (August 25) in Pakistan.

Some of his popular ghazals are:

*Ranjish Hi Sahi Dil Hi Dukhane Ke Liye Aa*

*Ab Ke Hum Kabhi Bichden To Khwabon Mein Milen*

*Kathin Hai Raah Guzar Thodi Duur Saath Chalo*

*Aashiqi Bedili Se Mushqil Hai*

*Badan Mein Aag Si Chehra Gulab Jaisa Hai*

*Dost Bankar Bhi Nahin Saath Nibhane Vaale*

A few of my favourite couplets penned by Ahmed Faraz:

Jis simt bhi dekhun nazar aataa hai ke tum ho
Ai jaan-e-jahan ye koi tum saa hai ke tum ho
simt =  direction

Ye khwaab hai khushbuu hai ke jhonka hai ke pal hai
Ye dhundh hai baadal hai ke saayaa hai ke tum ho

Ik dard ka phailaa hua sehra hai ke main hun
Ik mauj mein aayaa huaa dariya hai ke tum ho;

***

Tu paas bhi ho to dil beqaraar apna hai
Ke hum ko tera nahin intazaar apna hai

Mile koi bhi tera zikr chhed deta hai
Ke jaise saaraa jahaa raazdaar apna hai;

***

Us ko juda hue bhi zamana bahut huaa
Ab kyaa kahein ye qissa purana bahut huaa

Is aashiqi mein jaan se jaanaa bahut huaa

Mana ki us se milnaa-milaanaa bahut huaa;
taarruf = introduction

***

In baarishon se dosti achchi nahi 'Faraz'
Kachcha tera makaan hai kuch to khayal kar;

***

Tum bhi khafa ho log bhi bereham hain doston
Ab ho chala yakin ke bure hum hain doston;

***

Karun na yaad agar kis tarah bhulaun usee
Ghazal bahana karun aur gungunau usee;

***

Is se pehle ke hum bewafa ho jaayein
Kyon na ai dost hum juda ho jaayein;

Listen to the ghazal 'Ranjish Hi Sahi' sung by Mehdi Hassan:

 ***

the ghazal:

Ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhane ke liye aa
Aa phir se mujhe chor ke jaane ke liye aa

Pehle se marasim na sahi phir bhi kabhi to
Rasm-o-reh-e-duniya hi nibhane ke liye aa

Kis-kis ko batayenge judaai ka sabab hum
Tu mujhse khafa hai to zamaane ke liye aa

Yeh aakhari kshamme bhi bujhaane ke liye aa

Marasim = Relation/Relationship/Affinity
Rasm-o-reh-e-duniya = Customs of the society
Sabab = Reason
Khafa = Angry
Dil-elkhushfaham = Optimistic heart
Kshamme = candles

***

I think poets/writers don't die.
They immortalize themselves in their works.

And an appropriate tribute to a poet could be
reading and reciting his poems.
What say?

Enjoy the poetry! Enjoy the music!

hi mu...sical !

jo log bhi gazal pasand karte hain un logon ne yah gazal kabhi na kabhi suni jaroor hogi....ek do couplets aqsar log quote bhi karte hain.....!

.....aap ne apni pasand ke jo couplets diye hain un me se kisi ek ko pasand karna bada mushkil hai ..kyon ki wo aap ki pasand hai tao sabhi laazbaab hain phir bhi ek jaroor apni pasand likhoonga...

          " tum bhi khafa ho log bhi bereham hain dosto

             ab ho chala yaqeen ki bure hain hum dosto "

promilla

at times i gather information from various sources, including websites.  i don't have a great memory, you see.  this blog happened by chance. as i told vsgopal, i read about the poet's demise and this ghazal came to mind. i am glad that you liked the blog/ghazals. i also like runa laila's version (after mh's).  i also think jagjit singh has not sung this ghazal. i am amazed at this. i think jagjit singh prefers to sing sudarshan fakir's and nida fazli's poetry more than other poets. thanks for the appreciation. cheers and regards.
