~ My Favourite Song ~

Song: Surmayi Shaam Is Tarah Aaye
Film: Lekin (1991)
Singer: Suresh Wadkar
Lyricist: Gulzar
Music Director: Pt Hridyanath Mangeshkar

Lyrics:

Surmayi shaam is tarah aaye
Saans lete hain jis tarah saaye

Koi aahat nahi badan ki kahin
Phir bhi lagta hai to yahin hai kahin
Waqt jaata sunayi deta hai
Tera saaya dikhayi deta hai
Jaise khushboo nazar se chhu jaaye
Saans lete hain jis tarah saaye

Surmayi shaam....

Din ka jo bhi pahar guzarta hai
Koi ehsaan sa utarta hai
Waqt ke paanv dekhta hun main
Roz ye chhanv dekhta hun main
Aaye jaise koi khayal aaye
Saans lete hain jis tarah saaye

Surmayi shaam....

***

If you have seen the movie, you would understand the lyrics well.

The movie is set in Rajasthan. Dimple Kapadia plays the role of Reva.
Vinod Khanna visits an old deserted haveli on some official work.
He happens to meet Reva. He is fascinated and charmed by her.
He tries to trace her whereabouts but in vain.
He wonders if he had ever met a girl called Reva or was it a figment
of his confused mind. (In this context you may appreciate the lyrics.)

All the songs of Lekin were good. Yara Seeli Seeli sung by Lata M
was the most popular and got the movie some awards too.

Hema Malini made a guest appearance performing a classical dance.

If I remember correctly, the first sceen depcits a train
moving at high speed, splitting the darkness and silence of the night.
The haunting mood set in the first sceen continued all through the movie.

I had scolded my friend a lot for taking us to Plaza cinema hall
(in Connaught Place, New Delhi) for this haunting, sad and slow movie
for the first show on the second day of its release.

Hema’s dance seemed like comic relief in a Shakespearean tragedy.

Surmayi Shaam is sung by my favourite singer Suresh Wadkar.
All the songs were penned by poet-lyricist Gulzar.
If you love off-beat cinema, you may like watching Lekin.

Enjoy the music.

dimple has to her credit some memorable roles including this (as reva). i like only very few of her films. she looked good in saagar, rudaali, dil chahta hai and leela. she wasted her talent doing stupid, non-sensical movies. there are many songs picturized on dimple that i like. good to know that you like the picturization of this song. cheers and regards.

'seene mein jalan" is a nice song. i think that some songs need a peculiar mood to enjoy the soulful lyrics. what say?? i like most of the songs sung by suresh wadkar. after reading comments of music lovers i think i should post a bouquet of sw songs soon. as i told nartaj ji, i was also hooked by yara sili sili. i have the lyrics by heart.

your fav lata mangeshkar bagged the national award for best playback singer (female) for yara sili sili and gulzar won national award for best lyricist for the same song. in fact the movie won many national awards, including one for the music director and one for the costume designer. if you have seen the movie, you may agree that the costumes were really convincingly designed.

i had read the discussion that took place between you and mr natraj on the song 'dil ne phir yaad kiya'. i thank both of you for sharing your views with all of us. it has enriched the blog. thanks and regards.

even i was hooked by 'yara sili sili' when the film was released. since i like sw a lot i chose to post this song. the lyrics are sweet. songs of bazaar are so sweet -- lyrics, music, singing.... just too good. i had posted a songs bouquet of bazaar. you may click here to check the blog.

i like jagjit kaur singing 'dekh lo aaj humko ji bhar ke'. talat aziz didn't get much work as playback singer despite singing hit ghazals like 'phir chidi raat baat phoolon ki' (bazaar) and 'zindagi jab bhi teri bazm mein laati hai humein' (umrao jaan). coming back to music of bazaar, i like all the compositions.... khaiyyam was at his best. you may be right about bhupinder's song being a misfit in the collection. as you rightly said "pasand apni apni". thanks for the inputs. cheers and regards.
